The Tabernacle

Under the new banner of Carnival Village … The Tabernacle, an iconic Grade II listed building in the heart of Notting Hill, takes on an exciting and historic new lease of life. Stepping up its status as an international entertainment venue, it partners with The Yaa Centre nearby in the borough of Westminster.

Look forward to a diverse programme – theatre, comedy, live music, dance, film and poetry – including carnival related shows such as steel band concerts and The London Calypso Tent.

With bookable conference and arts spaces including our enviable dance studio, indulge in an exciting variety of community activities – classes, workshops  and schools – from ballet, contemporary,  jazz and street dance to capoeira and yoga. In carnival arts, we indulge in music to masquerade to marketing via youth education, training, business development and the Carnival Village Touring Roadshow. (PS: we love the Notting Hill Carnival, but actually don’t run it!)

May 2009, saw an excelent Restaurant/Bar at The Tabernacle open.

Decent food, fab surroundings with big comfy seats to flop into, shame that the mobile reception is none existent thought!

The Best of the Portobello Acoustic sessions, an offshoot of those from the ones held at The Metropolitan, were great here - and only the seating let it done by being a little hard on the posterior after a while.

Still, I keep hearing great things about the gigs at The Tabernacle - including people on Portobello Market raving about The Trojans playing there this past weekend (16/17 Oct 2009).

It definitely has a good community vibe about it - but also quite swish and professional with the mix of management between Carnival Village for the meeting spaces, events and gigs, along with Portobello Live for managing the bar and restaurant. If only the coffee was a little better in the daytime - but then it is best set up for being an evening and night time place, with cool bar and restaurant staff making great cocktails as well as stiffer drinks that help make the night have the extra glow...

A great asset for Notting Hill - and true as well as genuine "heart" for the best and most famous little village in London!!

The Phoenix Rose Single Launch and Ethical fashion show was sold as an ethical extravaganza and it certainly lived up to its name. The auditorium in the beautiful Tabernacle was packed to the rafters with fashionistas, buyers, journalists and passersby who liked the idea of spending their evening at a fashion show. The night also had an auction where designers allowed some of their designs to be auctioned off to raise money for charity.

The Phoenix Rose were on top form playing their reggae, dub, Indian influenced pop music in the background while the models strutted down the runway. The designers all used the modelling agency Models for Diversity who came in all shapes, sizes and colours which was far more of a step forward for fashion than the tiny baby steps that have been made during London Fashion Week.

The labels there included Credau, the eco-friendly men's label who sold themselves well throwing barely dressed oiled up men down the catwalk at us.

My favourite label of the night had to be My Only One, who took the renewal idea of making new clothes out of old ones that Urban Outfitters had and actually made it, how can I say it, work. The renewal section in UO is a good idea and I always venture over to that section when I pop in but it just does not challenge itself.

My Only One's outfits were out there but that is what you want from a designer label. Tunics were fashioned out of men's rugby shirts, jumpsuits were made out of tracksuits. I would highly recommend this label.

All in all it was a pretty good night, for those who don't travel in the right circles to get into London Fashion Week. Music, fashion, free wine what else could you need..... oooh and I got a free gift bag.

Book Slam at The Tabernacle

I had the exquisite pleasure of attending July's Book Slam, a monthly literary night club featuring poetry, book reading, live music and a DJ, hosted by Patrick Neate.

The club was recently relocated to The Tabernacle and they couldn't have picked a better venue. The atmosphere was stylish but relaxed, helped by the bi-level layout, image projections and great music. July's featured poet, Luke Wright, was impressive and witty while David Nicholls' reading of his book, One Day, was riveting and drenched in humour. Lettie rounded up the night with a solo, multi-instrument performance of her songs; not even the failure of the keyboard detracted from her performance.

I'm already counting down the days to the August show and in the meantime, I'll be checking out the ground floor bar at The Tabernacle.

"The" place to hang out in Sizzling Notting Hill. It's great to see the place back in use and "proper" use. A real community hub with great events, gigs, classes, a bar and restaurant. The spirit of the old neighbourhood is alive and kicking in Powis Square!
